What Are Varicose Veins?

Normally, your blood circulates from your heart to your legs via your arteries and back to the heart through your veins. Veins contain one-way valves which allow blood to return from the legs against gravity. If the valve leaks or has reflux, the blood will pool in the leg veins, which can become enlarged and form varicosities.  Varicosities are veins that are enlarged that can be visible on the skin, or as is often the case, not seen, except with ultrasound.
